Gross Salary Definition

Gross salary means the total amount an employee earns before any deductions, such as taxes, retirement contributions, or health insurance premiums. This large chunk is a collection of different segments aside from base salary, such as bonuses, commissions, overtime time, and any other financial perks the employer provides. 

For example, if an employee has a base salary of $50,000 per year and receives a $5,000 bonus, their annual gross salary would be $55,000. This complete understanding of what a gross salary includes helps employees gauge their total compensation package more accurately.

4. Annual Gross Salary

5. Biweekly Gross Salary

This type can be described as the employees’ total earnings on a biweekly basis. It is practised in many organisations and is helped by multiplying the weekly gross salary by two.

6. Semimonthly Gross Salary

Gross salaries that fall under this category are paid bi-monthly, often on set dates like the fifteenth and last day of the month. It splits the gross monthly salary into two halves based on the pro-rated basic salary.

7. Daily Gross Salary

This means the total amount of money that an employee gets from his employee for each working day. They can be determined by the monthly or annual salary division by the number of working days in that period.

Gross Salary Formula

If the formula for calculating gross salary is well understood, the process can be undertaken easily. The basic formula for finding out the gross salary is:

Gross Salary = Base salary + House Rent Allowances + other allowances

Base Salary:

House Rent Allowance: 

$10,000

Other Allowances (e.g. Medical Allowance): 

$5,000

Gross Salary = $60,000 + $10,000 + $5,000 = $75,000

Monthly Gross Salary

One should know how monthly and annual gross salaries are computed for financial estimation. Your annual gross salary is divided into 12 months to determine your monthly gross salary. For example:

If your annual gross salary is $75,000, then your monthly gross salary is ($75,000)/12 = $6,250

That means you would be earning $6,250 every month of the year before deductions are made.

Annual Gross Salary

On the other hand, if you already have your Gross monthly salary, you can multiply it by 12 to get your gross yearly salary. For example:

If your monthly gross salary means $5,000

Annual Gross Salary = Monthly Gross Salary / 12 = $5,000 / $12 = $60,000
