A negative working environment in any workplace can lead to various mental health issues that adversely affect employees and also the productivity of a company. The employee suffering from a mental health problem tends to be less efficient at work ultimately causing the disability in completing the tasks timely. According to a study conducted by (world health organization) WHO, about 264 million people suffer from depression that leads to various mental health problems worldwide. Moreover, about 80% of employee’s mental health issues remain undiagnosed only because of the lack of awareness from the companies. However, the mental health of a worker depends on the workforce of the company, the behavior of the co-workers and supervisors.

A workplace that promotes mental health problems among employees leads the company towards a great loss making the economy weaker. The more your employee is affected by the mental issues the less he will take interest in the tasks and will remain absent which will ultimately decrease the productivity and efficacy of your organization.

Investigate the issue and try to find out the cause as it is the responsibility of the manager or the corresponding authority to take care of the workers in his/her organization. Here are a few effective approaches to help your employee take down the depression or mental issues:

1- Understand and Accommodate your Employees

If an employee is empowered to negotiate with the HR staff about certain issues, he/she is facing, listen to them first, and give them the confidence to speak openly about their issues or problems. Try to learn about their depression and symptoms also help them by fixing their issues.

2- Creating a Suitable and healthy Workplace

Employers should address the issues related to mental health to their employees and should motivate them to express their shortcomings without any hesitation. The main goal of employers is to give awareness to the employees about their responsibilities and address their mental health and issues deteriorating it.

3- Provide a Flexible Schedule to your Employees

Employees suffering from depression often struggle to work in their normal routine. Supervisors should have a check on their employees if they are behaving abnormally. The corresponding authority should reach out to those employees in a supportive and non-judgmental manner that are having this issue of depression. Moreover, inquire about their mental health and allow a flexible timing for them if they ask for it. 

4- Avoid Negative Criticism

Sometimes employees cannot concentrate on their work due to mental illness and the pressure of completing their deadlines moreover, criticism by their employers will further worsen the situation for employees. In this situation, employers should assign their employee easy tasks which they are able to complete in their mental condition and make them feel relaxed.

5- Ending self-isolation

Sometimes employees feel isolated and leftover due to mental illness. Assign easy and suitable tasks to your employees at which they will feel satisfied. Employee engagement is important in the company, so; keep your people engaged with everyone. It is necessary and best practice for management to make their employees feel a part to the organization in order to diminish their isolation.
